Montréal, June 13, 2024 – Chez Doris, an organization dedicated to supporting vulnerable and homeless women, is pleased to announce the weekend reopening of its day shelter, located at 1430 rue Chomedey, starting this Saturday, June 15, 2024. The reopening of the shelter, which has been closed on weekends for the past ten months, comes at a critical time. With the housing crisis at a critical point and the arrival of the July 1 moving day upon us, the number of people in vulnerable housing situations is steadily rising across Montreal and elsewhere. Shelters throughout the province are at full capacity, highlighting the precarity of the situation. The weekend reopening of the Chez Doris day shelter not only reaffirms the commitment to their clientele, it also underscores their determination to continue offering these essentials services as quickly as possible, to meet the ever-growing need.
Diane Pilote, Executive Director of Chez Doris, expresses her feelings: “The relaunch of our weekend services was of vital importance, so being able to open our day shelter 7 days a week again fills us with hope and happiness. Thanks to the addition of these weekend slots, we’ll be able to ensure the continuity of support we already offer across our five sites: our day shelter, our night shelter and our community centre, which offer health and social services; and our two residences. We remain dedicated to our mission of ensuring the well-being of vulnerable women whose situation has deteriorated significantly as a result of both the local housing crisis and the rise of homelessness across Montreal. I’d like to congratulate everyone on our team for the hard work and unwavering commitment that made the reopening of our weekend shelter a possibility.”
By reinforcing its service offer with the weekend reopening of the day shelter, Chez Doris is better able to meet the growing need for outreach services for women in positions of vulnerability. This uplifting news comes on the heels of several other recent initiatives implemented to ensure that Chez Doris can continue to both respond and adapt to the changing social situation. During the period of weekend service closure, Chez Doris focused on recruiting and training several new qualified support staff, some of whom will be working at the day shelter, thereby ensuring the much-needed continuity of vital services across all of the Chez Doris sites.
This initiative reinforces Chez Doris’ sustained commitment to vulnerable women and others experiencing housing insecurity, while highlighting its vital role in improving the lives of local women. Every day, Chez Doris provides the hope hundreds of women need to get off the streets and rebuild their lives.
